WHEN I WISHED I WAS DEAD ALREADY
That was a wish
I had one day
In May driving
a camouflaged
truck full of ammo
when I got stuck
in the wet mud
with my wheels
spinning around
with no place to
go except down
as a battle raged
up at the front.
I kissed my ass
goodbye—waiting
to be blown up to
bits of smithereens.
Then I remembered
my wife telling me
she would not want
to live without me.
I abandon the truck
and catapulted wildly
into the nearest foxhole
